Carl Hansen & Son Lounge Chair Model CH25 Hans Wegner
The CH25 Lounge Chair, with its distinctive shape, is classy and simple – just like many of Hans J. Wegner ’s other legendary designs. The launch of the Lounge Chair caused a sensation due to Wegner’s choice of materials for the backrest and seat. The braided paper cord was a substitute for seagrass and was developed during World War II. The material had never been used in furniture before. However, Wegner was enthusiastic about the look of paper cord, which does not stretch and offers optimal durability, and the same has been true for subsequent generations. The CH25 Lounge Chair has enjoyed great popularity ever since and has been in continuous production since 1950 – a testament to Wegner’s visionary approach to design. It takes a skilled craftsman 10 hours and around 400 meters of paper cord to hand-weave a seat and backrest, using a specific, web-like technique that is visible on both sides of the backrest. The striking result of this sophisticated process is an extraordinary chair that fascinates from every angle.
