The architect and designer Alvar Aalto contributed greatly to the reputation of Scandinavian modernism. In both his buildings and his furnishings - which range from chairs, tables and lighting to tableware and glassware - Aalto's sensitivity to nature and to organic forms and materials was omnipresent.
Rather than the tubular metal frame favored by Bauhaus designers and Le Corbusier, Aalto's focus was on wood. His aesthetic is best represented by the "Paimio Chair," developed in 1930 as part of his overall design for a Finnish tuberculosis sanatorium. Aalto's use of plywood had a huge influence on Charles Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Marcel Breuer, and others who later adopted the material. To maintain quality standards in the manufacture of his designs, Aalto founded the company Artek in 1935 with his wife, Aino Aalto, which still exists today.
